About Us

The Vermont Big Game Trophy Club was founded in March 2008.

Recognizing the lack of an accurate and current big game records keeping system in Vermont, the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club set up a records keeping club for three species of Vermont’s native big game (deer, bear, and moose). These records are available to the public through publication of a Records Book. Our goal is to publish the “Records of Vermont Big Game” every 5 years. This book contains stories, photographs, and the complete listing of trophies entered in each category.

On Tuesday, August 19, 2008, Vermont Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Wayne Laroche and the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club signed a Cooperative Agreement in which the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department recognizes the VBGTC as the "official keepers of the trophy records for all Vermont big game."

The VBGTC is a 501(c) non-profit organization established to document the largest deer, bear, and moose killed in Vermont. In addition to record keeping, the mission of the VBGTC is to protect, preserve, and promote Vermont's hunting heritage. The VBGTC maintains all trophy records from the former Vermont Big Game Trophy Awards Program that had been administered by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, as well as the addition of all future records.

The club is actively searching for and measuring trophies from Vermont that have been harvested in the past. These trophies must meet the minimum score standards set by the VBGTC, which are lower than the Boone and Crockett Club minimums.

The VBGTC held its first Awards Banquet & Trophy Show on April 4, 2009, in Barre, VT. The Club published its first record book titled "Records of Vermont Big Game" in 2013. The second edition was published in 2018. This book contains records, stories, and photos of some of the largest big game animals ever harvested in Vermont.

If you have taken a large deer, bear or moose in Vermont and are interested in getting it scored for entry into the club records or need more information on the entry requirements, please contact Curtis Smiley at 802-793-9357.

MISSION STATEMENT

The goal of the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club is to conduct itself as the premier big game records-keeping organization for whitetail deer, black bear, and moose harvested in the State of Vermont. This is accomplished by utilizing a network of volunteer measurers throughout Vermont who measure trophies and forward the information to the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club offices.

The Vermont Big Game Trophy Club strives to support and advance the time-honored tradition of hunting in Vermont.
