The Vermont Big Game Trophy Club was founded in March 2008.
Recognizing the lack of an accurate and current big game records keeping system in Vermont, the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club set up a records keeping club for all four species of Vermont ’s native big game (deer, bear, moose and turkey). These records will be available to the public through publication of a Records Book, as well as being published in Outdoors Magazine and posting on this website. Our goal is to publish the “Records of Vermont Big Game” every three years. This book will contain stories, photographs, and the complete listing of trophies entered in each category.
On Tuesday, August 19, 2008 Vermont Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Wayne Laroche and the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club signed a Cooperative Agreement in which the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department recognizes the VBGTC as the "official keepers of the trophy records for all Vermont big game."
The VBGTC is a non-profit organization founded in March 2008 by Brad Hanson and Boone and Crockett Club Official Measurer Curtis Smiley to document the largest deer, bear, moose, and turkey killed in Vermont. In addition to records keeping, the mission of the VBGTC is to protect, preserve and promote Vermont's hunting heritage. The VBGTC will be maintaining all trophy records from the former Vermont Big Game Trophy Awards Program that had been administered by the Fish & Wildlife Department as well as adding all future records.
The VBGTC has already uncovered several Boone and Crockett Club qualifying bear and moose that were taken in Vermont and not yet entered into the Boone and Crockett Club records or the Vermont records. The club is actively searching to locate and measure trophies from Vermont that have been harvested in the past. These trophies must meet the minimum score standards set by the VBGTC, which are lower than Boone and Crockett Club minimums.
The VBGTC held its first annual Awards Banquet & Trophy Show on April 4, 2009 in Barre, VT. The Club expects to publish its first records book titled "Records of Vermont Big Game" in 2010. This book will contain records, stories and photos of Vermont's big game species.
If you have taken a large deer, bear, moose, or turkey in Vermont and are interested in getting it scored for entry into the club records or need more information on the entry requirements, please contact Curtis Smiley at 802-849-2986.
MISSION STATEMENT
The goal of the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club is to establish itself as the premiere big game records keeping organization for Whitetail Deer, Black Bear, Turkey and Moose harvested in the State of Vermont . This will be accomplished utilizing a network of volunteer measurers throughout Vermont to measure trophies and forward this information to the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club offices.
The Vermont Big Game Trophy Club strives to support and advance the time honored tradition of hunting in Vermont. This will be accomplished through partnerships with various conservation groups and by providing scholarships to Vermont youths who wish to attend the Green Mountain Conservation Camp administered by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.
If you are interested in supporting the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club, please contact us for more information on our “Associate” memberships and business sponsorship packages.
